One of the central themes underpinning sustainable development is equality and fairness. This is reflected in the concept of 'empowered citizenship'- in that we can all make a contribution to making our community (our local area, our region, our country, our planet) a better place now and in the future.
Some important areas are quite difficult to understand. Science, economics, politics are often quite difficult to comprehend and yet are central to decisions that are made by others about our lives.
To what extent do you think that it is your duty as a citizen to be 'informed'? Are you informed? How do you get to be informed about serious issues? To what extent do you think that you should leave the complicated decisions up to others ?

Having watched this video and the Al Gore's, one has to stop and think whether the information is correct. I for one will never doubt global warming and the changes that are happening. But as a human being and also having been born in a third world country, i start seeing some of the things happening as unfair. Africa for starters is still developing and there are hardly any hardcore factories. When informing the general public i think its still a good thing to let everyone know the two sides to a coin.
ReplyDeleteHaving said that the informers are normally big brodcasters such as BBC and CNN. one also has to stop and think who they represent, the world at largeor their own nations.
When it comes to decisions i believe informing the whole world about whats really happening and letting the public decide like Simon Cowell.
Benjamin Disraeli, (1804 – 1881), a British Prime Minister once said “There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics." Statistics can be misleading and sometimes deliberately distorting. In the film, scientists such as Dr. Tim Ball and Professor John Christy and others have stated with evidence that changes often occur in our climate. I am particularly drawn to the evidence provided of the 14th century ‘Ice age’ in UK, during which the Thames completely became ice. However, prior to this year, there were periods when the climate will be very warm. How can these changes in the climate be explained. James Hansen of NASA who started this theory on global warming in his subsequent reports has since labelled the issue on global warming as “insensitive”. Yet people such as Al Gore and the western nation’s governments are still making us to believe that climate changes are manmade.
ReplyDeleteJuly 17, 2009 Times Newspaper report states, “The NHS has been told to plan for a worst-case scenario of 65,000 swine flu deaths this year”, yet the reported deaths from swine as at Thursday 19th November for UK is 214. Manufacturers of Flu jab have benefited from the scare reports made. Governments and various other organisations associated with global warming, including Al Gore who has made a lot of money from his campaign are simply in it for the benefits they are getting. Millions of jobs have been created as a result of ‘the climate change’ campaign, and the governments of these countries will rather continue to sustain these jobs for political reasons.
